Bell Media announced today (March 27) that the highly anticipated television series, The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s classic novel, will debut on Bravo on April 30 with a 2-hour premiere at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT. Following its broadcast run, the 10-episode series will stream exclusively on CraveTV in Canada.

Produced by MGM Television, the Toronto-shot series will premiere its first three episodes in the U.S. on Hulu, with subsequent episodes streaming weekly.

The television adaptation of Atwood’s dystopian novel stars Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) as Offred, Joseph Fiennes (“Shakespeare In Love”) as Commander Waterford, Samira Wiley (Orange Is The New Black) as Moira, Max Minghella (The Mindy Project) as Nick, Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) as the Commander’s wife Serena Joy, O.T. Fagbenle (The Five) as Luke, Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) as Ofglen, Madeline Brewer (Orange Is The New Black) as Janine, Amanda Brugel (MVP) and Ann Dowd (The Leftovers) as Aunt Lydia.

The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of life in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was once the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birth rate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. Offred will have to navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives and her fellow Handmaids as anyone could be a spy for Gilead and one wrong word could cost Offred her life. Offred’s one goal is to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Atwood serves as a consulting producer while the series is executive produced and written by Bruce Miller (The 100). Warren Littlefield (Fargo), Fran Sears, Ilene Chaiken (Empire), Sheila Hockin, John Weber and Frank Siracusa also serve as executive producers.

The Handmaid’s Tale premieres in Canada on Sunday, April 30, at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT with a 2-hour premiere event. The series will air weekly beginning May 7 at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT.
