General Hospital’s Frank Valentini teased “huge news” over the weekend on social media and then revealed via video on Tuesday (Feb. 2) that Michael Easton will be returning to the soap “soon.” Before the announcement, fans were wondering if the soap would hand over a contract to returning guest star Tristan Rogers (Robert) or bring back Vanessa Marcil (Brenda) or Greg Vaughan (Lucky).

Instead, the ABC soap is bringing back an actor who as already played four characters on this show in four years. Easton originally joined the GH cast in 2012 as his One Life to Live character John McBain. Due to a lawsuit with Prospect Park, McBain was written out in 2013 and Easton returned to the show as a new character, Silas Clay — who was related to his former Port Charles character Stephen Clay (aka Caleb Morley), which Easton also portrayed on GH in early 2013. Silas was then killed off last summer by Madeleine Reeves (Donna Mills).

If you want to consider all of General Hospital/Port Charles canon, this “exciting new character” would actually be Easton’s sixth character in the ABC soap universe as the actor also portrayed Caleb’s alternate identity, Michael. While Easton’s a good actor and I was a fan of McBain and the chemistry he had with Kelly Monaco on Port Charles, it’s a shame GH can’t write for actors and characters that fans are already invested in. What’s the deal with Brad (Perry Chen) and Lucas (Ryan Carnes)? When will Laura (Genie Francis) and Tracy (Jane Elliot) get the leading stories that they (and their fans) deserve? Of if they wanted to bring back actors whose characters were killed off in 2015, when will it be Ian Buchanan’s turn to return as Duke?

Lynn Herring sent a special message to her fans on her Facebook page regarding why we haven’t seen on General Hospital as Lucy Coe in a while. “I do miss Lucy but I am not interested in a line here or there or a day once in awhile. All the years of happiness and satisfaction I had playing Lucy are too important to me, and I would never want to belittle all the great memories I have of her adventures. If [executive producer] Frank [Valentini] and the writers need Lucy for a story or a firm connection in the show then I will jump out of my saddle and come running for sure.” Sounds pretty fair to me. Let’s hope they come calling, but with the way ABC execs are prioritizing “fan favourite” returns, we won’t hold our breathe.

— That’s soap vet Ashley Jones who surprised General Hospital fans on the Friday, Jan. 29th episode as she appeared as Kristina’s (Lexi Ainsworth) college professor, Parker Forsyth. Jones is best known to soap fans as The Bold and the Beautiful’s Bridget Forrester from 2004 until 2010 and has made a number of guest appearances since.
