A spokesperson for Global tells The TV Watercooler that Big Brother Canada is on hiatus for the upcoming broadcast year. Further details will be announced by the network at a later date.
Corus Entertainment unveiled Global’s lineup for the 2017-18 television season earlier today, with fan favourite Big Brother Canada missing from the press release.
Produced by Insight Productions in association with Corus Entertainment and Endemol, Big Brother Canada recently wrapped up its fifth season, with poker player Kevin Martin taking home a $100,000 cheque, a $30,000 home furnishing makeover from The Brick, and a new 2017 Toyota 86.
Big Brother Canada’s ratings this past year have been strong. In a recent release by Bell Media, Big Brother Canada charted as Canada’s Top 20 Most-Watched Programs for the 2016-17 television season. Big Brother Canada was Global’s third most watched program in all key demographics: A25-54, A18-49 and A18-34.
In addition to being a ratings hit, the series was adored by fans across Canada and the world. Big Brother Canada produced one of the best seasons for the reality TV franchise this past year — by upping the twists and enhancing the competitions.
One could speculate that it may be too expensive for Corus to commission a sixth season at the moment as the broadcasting company had already picked up the Canadian version of The Bachelor to air on W Network this fall. Canadian programs taking place on the Global TV midseason schedule in place of Big Brother Canada for 2018 include Home to Win (which is moving over from HGTV) as well as dramas Mary Kills People and Private Eyes.
Host Arisa Cox took to Twitter to send out love to the show’s devoted audience, “It’s been five brilliant season and now it’s official, Big Brother Canada is on hiatus. Massive love to our Big Brother fam from the bottom of my heart.”
Big Brother Canada fans can get in touch with Global over social media (you can tweet them or visit their Facebook page) and let them know how you feel about the show’s hiatus. Additionaly, you can reach out to them by filling out a contact form on GlobalTV.com.
